Do you Need a Periodontist for Dental Implant Surgery?

Currently, dental implant surgery is one of the best ways to replace one or more missing teeth. When done right, the function and esthetics provided by the dental implants, abutments, and crowns can be unrivaled. No wonder the demand for dental implants has been increasing steadily, and with it the number of dentists offering them.

With so many dentists offering dental implants these days it can be a daunting task to find the right dentist. Luckily, there are some indications that you can look for that can help you make the best choice for you and your smile.

Generally, if the dentist is a periodontist, that’s a good sign that they would have more experience and knowledge than non-specialist providers. A periodontist, such as Nashua Dental Group’s Dr. Biebuyck, specializes in the tissue that supports the teeth, namely the gums and the bones they are rooted in. This specialty gives them a deep understanding of the tissue that the dental implant goes into and how the tissue will heal around the implant. Having this specialty means that many of the patients they have experience with are patients that need dental implants. Compare this to a general dentist that places implants, who might have dental implant patients as a smaller percentage of their dental patients.

All this being said, there are many general dentists that are good at placing dental implants and have chosen to focus their continuing education on periodontics or dental implants. For example, Dr. Khan is a restorative dentist but has won an award for periodontics while at Tufts and makes periodontics training a priority. In a situation such as this one you know you are in good hands.

Getting dental implants is a life changing decision so you should expect nothing short of the best. If you want to learn more about dental implant treatment at Nashua Dental Group, don’t hesitate to contact our Nashua dental office.
