Many of us are taking proper safety precautions during this time by wearing masks, washing hands frequently, and staying at home- but as a result, many of us have also missed our dental appointments in the past year because of the pandemic.
Since the rollout of the vaccine, more and more dental offices have reopened. During this time, we should emphasize the importance of continuing your regular dental check up routine for the sake of your gum health.
Studies show a distinct relationship between periodontal disease and the inflammation that can lead to heart attacks and strokes. Not to mention, a lack of dental visits can allow periodontitis, the most severe form of gum disease, to leave a person more susceptible to COVID-19 complications.
One study published in February of this year in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, found that periodontal disease created severe COVID-19 complications for 568 Covid patients. The study saw that those with periodontitis, were at higher risk of drawbacks, including entry into an intensive-care unit in the hospital, a need for a ventilator, and in some instances death.
From this we can learn that missing out on those regular dental visits during the pandemic can have serious ramifications. To book an appointment with us, you can do so here.
