When your dentist looks into your mouth, teeth are not the only things they see. In fact, your dentist can tell a great deal about your health! Many dentists call the mouth “the window to the body,” and rightfully so. Just by looking into your mouth, your dentist has the ability to spot signs of various illnesses.
Here are some examples of what a dentist might notice during a routine exam.
Pregnancy
During an oral examination, your dentist may come across red growths on the gums or between the teeth, which can be a sign of pregnancy. These growths, referred to as pregnancy tumors, appear in only about 5% of women. They aren’t dangerous but may indicate increased gum sensitivity. A trip to your dentist may also result in a visit to your OBGYN.
Anemia
If your gums have lost their reddish hue and appear pale or white, this could indicate iron deficiency. Discoloration in the gums may tip your dentist off to potential anemia.
Diabetes
Even if you are unaware you have diabetes, your dentist might notice it. People with diabetes have a higher risk of developing abscesses. While healthy individuals can also get abscesses, they are more common in diabetic patients.
Autoimmune Diseases
Sore red spots in the mouth could indicate an autoimmune disease, such as Lupus or Crohn’s disease. These sores not only reflect underlying health issues but can also cause serious oral problems, including painful mouth ulcers. If you notice these sores, visiting a dentist is important.
The next time you think about skipping a dental visit because your teeth look great, remember: regular dental exams provide more than an oral health check. They also give insight into your overall health.
